Fixin’ a hole…

May 23rd, 2011

Some kinks that will be fixed in the next release.

  • Proper stylesheet for iPhones and other handheld devices
  • Neater threaded comments

If there’s something you think should also be on this list, let me know a comment.

  1. I attempted to implement your theme on my blog, but I am having issues with the menu. I have six links and they keep stacking vertically instead of listing horizontally. The same happens when there are only two links. Do you know what is happening or able to fix it?

I am using WordPress 3.2.1 and checked using Firefox 5.0.1 and IE 8.0.76

I’d also like to include a header image and Google Analytics. These seem unfinished or deactivated. Any solution?

    Thank you for your feedback.

    • Hi Adam,

Thanks for the feedback. The menu items stacking is a bug on my part, and will be fixed in the next release of Extricate. It is related to code changes which happen when menus items are created and ordered via the drag-and-drop interface on the Menus page in WordPress.

The quick fix, for now, is to instead order the main menu items via the ‘Order’ form element in the Page Attributes box in your WordPress pages. Stephanie Leary of Silly Bean talks about this in an article about WordPress menus on her site.

Extricate does not support adding images to the header or adding Google Analytics in the free version of the theme. However, the premium version of the theme supports both of these features. If you would prefer to stick with the free version, then the best thing to do is implement a child theme on top of the core Extricate theme to allow header images, Google analytics and any other modification required.

Thanks for using Extricate, and please let me know if you have any other questions.

  2. Hi,

    Nice release.

Your max post width does not accommodate for the current YouTube HD 16:9 width @ 640px, even with the hang-left class. Embedding overlaps the sidebar, so you may want to enlarge your max post width.

The ‘hang-left’ class does work with YT iframes, but not with ‘old embed code’ (object embed) which allows for more parameter options (sorely lacking with iframe embedding), so I would like to be able to use ‘classic’ YT code with ‘hang-left’ class.

Any ‘out-of-the-box’ lightbox compatible solution for enhancing the use of thumbnails would also not go amiss …

    • Hi Peter,

Thanks for the info. All theme designs involve compromises, and one of the ones I chose to make while designing Extricate was about the widths of posts, and, therefore, the widths of embeds. As I mention in my post about the Extricate grid, the widths of the posts are related to the overall page grid, and so therefore it’s not so easy to enlarge the maximum post width. The default styles can be overridden with a child theme, however, so it’s still possible for individual users to redo the grid if required.

The ‘hang-left’ class will work with the old YouTube embed code, but has to be manually entered into the code, or else added to a surrounding div in which the code is nested. The ‘classic’ code has already been deprecated, however, and will not be around forever, so my efforts in any updates to Extricate will focus on the iframe/HTML5 embed code rather than the ‘classic’ Flash embed code.

The next release of the theme will hopefully also have a thumbnail lightbox feature, once a few other things are cleaned up.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
