Extricate: a brief introduction

February 10th, 2012

You’re looking at Extricate, a grid-based, minimalist WordPress theme for writers, bloggers and journalists.

If you want to get your hands on it, you can download it here. But first, maybe let me tell you all about it. These points all link to separate posts, so you can either get all this info by just keepin’ on scrolling, or go to the individual posts…

Most important of all… Extricate ain’t finished yet! There’s more coming soon. If you end up using Extricate, please let me know and you’ll be added to the list of links in the sidebar. And if you have any suggestions about what you’d like to see added to the theme, holla in the comments…

Aaaand… just to finish, here’s the part where I ask you for money. Extricate has taken a lot of time and effort to make and maintain. If you end up using it, you can show your love with a donation to support future development, via PayPal. I’ll be very happy to receive whatever you feel comfortable donating.

So, what are you waiting for? You can jump in and download the theme now.

  1. It would be nice to mention somewhere that the download is a limited demo version, and that a number of essential features are behind an “Extricate Plus” paywall.

You may have not meant to be deceptive about omitting this fact, or by using a “Donate” button (i.e., rather than a “get the full version” link). To be fair, you never referred to Extricate as “free”, but having to install the theme to discover that I’d downloaded a demo left a bad taste in my mouth.

Extricate was easily enough uninstalled once I discovered this, so no harm done to me aside from a few wasted minutes. Kind of a shame, though — if I hadn’t felt intentionally misled, I might have donated and helped to promote the theme.

    • Hi, Nice One.

My mistake! You got the old 1.0 version. Try downloading again now and you’ll get the 2.0 version – free as a bird, nothing disabled, no limits.

There was no intent to deceive, or to be sneaky, in what happened – I simply forgot to update the link to the zip files on updating the site. I hope you’ll give it another chance.

  2. Hello and many thanks for this Theme!

I needed a localized version in German. I did so by editing the .php files which worked fine. But I’m not sure if it is the right way to do it or not. Can you leave a few words on how to localize the Theme the best way?

    Many thanks, Christoph

    • Hi Christoph, glad you liked the theme, thanks. 🙂

At the moment the easiest way to make changes to the theme is to use a child theme – this should also apply to localizing it. However, editing the PHP files works too. The only risk here is that it might break in any future update to the theme, so best stick with child themes if you can.
